Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a very subtle and effective form of bodywork focused on improving the health of the nervous system and restoring integrity to the body.

During a session the client remains clothed and is invited to simply relax on the table while the practitioner engages various hands-on techniques aimed at releasing restrictions throughout the body, but especially in the cranium, spine, sacrum, and all of the muscles, tissues, and fluids within and around these structures.  Healthy movement in these areas is very subtle and quiet- for instance, the movement of the cranial bones is just 40 microns, which is approximately half of the thickness of a piece of paper- so the therapist is required to develop a very acute sense of touch in order to assess and treat at this level.  Unlike massage therapy, where pressure is applied in order to release a restriction, craniosacral therapy involves backing off of pressure to achieve the same effect.  This proves to be a very potent approach when working with these deeper tissues.

  • Stress
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Chronic Pain
  • Headaches
  • Neck and back pain
  • TMJ disorders and general jaw tension
  • Old and new injuries
  • Emotional trauma

Results can come after one session or several, depending on each individual’s particular situation, and it is recommended to try at least three sessions in order to get an idea of how this therapy can really benefit you.  After initially addressing their primary concern, many people continue coming in for sessions on a semi-regular basis because of how much it can help alleviate daily stress levels.

“Shawna gives so much more than a ‘relaxing’ massage. Her work has helped my knee pain, ongoing stress issues in my upper back and neck, and even gastrointestinal problems. No matter what’s going on in my body, Shawna brings what seems like magic to that place and leaves it feeling renewed. In addition, she is a Master of Transitions. The way she moves into and out of areas of the body is so smooth and seamless, you barely realize her hands have changed position. I’ve never met a massage therapist who could bring deep healing AND do it in a gentle and relaxing way, but that’s Shawna in a nutshell!”
